What Is Allostatic Load?

Why everyday stress can add up even when nothing feels “that bad”

There is a concept in stress physiology that I return to often in my work: allostasis.
Allostasis is the body's ability to maintain stability by adapting to changing demands.
Your nervous system is supposed to do this.
Something requires your attention and your body responds. Your heart rate may change. Stress hormones shift. Muscles prepare. Energy gets redirected.
Then, ideally, the demand passes and your system has a chance to recover.
The problem is when the demands keep coming.
Poor sleep. Work stress. Traffic. Financial pressure. Pain. Caregiving. Relationship tension. Noise. Screens. Illness. Grief. Not eating enough. Overtraining. Under-resting. A history of trauma.
None of those experiences has to be catastrophic on its own.
But your body still has to adapt to each one.
Over time, researchers describe the cumulative physiological burden of repeatedly adapting as allostatic load.
Neuroscientist Bruce McEwen helped develop this framework, describing allostatic load as the biological cost—or wear and tear—associated with repeatedly activating the systems we use to meet life's demands.
This doesn't mean stress is inherently harmful.
We need stress responses.
The issue is activation without enough recovery.
For someone living in a fast-moving environment, that load can become so normal that it stops feeling like stress.
Your baseline simply becomes:
on.
And sometimes being relaxed begins to feel unfamiliar.
What can that look like?
It may show up as:
Trouble winding down at night
Muscle tension or jaw clenching
Digestive changes during busy periods
Irritability
Poor concentration
Headaches
Restlessness
Feeling overwhelmed by noise or input
Waking up tired
Feeling uncomfortable when things finally become quiet
None of these symptoms automatically means allostatic load is the cause, and persistent symptoms should always be medically evaluated.
Allostatic load is also not a diagnosis.
There isn't one lab test that tells you whether yours is “high.”
It is a framework for understanding what may happen when the body's adaptive systems are repeatedly called upon without enough time to recover.
And sometimes it offers a better question than:
“Why can't I handle stress anymore?”
The question may actually be:
“How much has my system already been handling?”
